Following is a summary of some of the items that were considered at the November 23rd Powell River Regional District Board meeting. This summary is being provided as part of our commitment to transparency. It is our belief that an informed and engaged community results in decisions that serve the common good.
Inaugural Process – Election of Chair
Pursuant to provisions prescribed in the Local Government Act, Director Patrick Brabazon was acclaimed the Chair of the Board for 2018.
Appointment to the 2018 Vancouver Island Regional Library Board
The Board appointed Director Merrick Anderson as the Regional District’s representative to the 2018 Vancouver Island Regional Library Board and Laurence Fisher as the Alternate Director.
Holiday Season 2017 Office Closure
The Board endorsed the 2017 holiday season office closure from 4:30 pm on Friday, December 22, 2017 to 8:30 am on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.
Northside Volunteer Fire Department Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation
The Board received the Superior Tanker Shuttle Service Accreditation Report from Fire Underwriters Survey for the Northside Fire Protection Area and asked that a letter of congratulations be sent to the Northside Volunteer Fire Department for attaining this accreditation.
Northside Volunteer Fire Department Requisition Limit Increase
The Board directed staff to proceed with financial plans to replace the Northside Volunteer Fire Department #2 Fire Hall in Lund beginning in 2018 as indicated in the 2018-2022 financial plan and to forward the amended Northside Fire Protection Local Service Establishment Bylaw to the Board for first through third reading to increase the NVFD maximum requisition to an estimated tax rate of $2.465 per $1,000 in order to generate a (maximum) annual tax requisition of up to $420,825 over the 2018-2022 tax years.
2017 Solid Waste Management Plan Update
The Board adopted the 2017 Solid Waste Management and Resource Recovery Plan and directed staff to submit the plan to the Ministry of Environment once review by the City of Powell River and Tla’amin Nation has been completed.
Official Naming and Designation of the Lund Gazebo Property Donation as a Regional Park
The Board designated as a regional park, the 6.03 ha parcel of donated property legally described as Lot A, District Lot 1613, Group 1, New Westminster District, Plan EPP69773, i.e., the Lund Gazebo property and officially named this regional park ‘End of the Road Regional Park’. Consideration will be given to converting the property into a community park when appropriate legislation has been approved.
Texada Medical Centre Upgrades
The Board agreed to enter into a contract with Darren Marquis Construction Ltd. to renovate and upgrade the Texada Medical Centre as per Vancouver Coastal Health’s requirements for the fee of $272,264.93 and increased the 2018 budget for the project to allow for a 20%, $54,452.99 contingency.
