Van Anda Improvement District
Waterworks System Upgrade

Project made possible thanks to Federal Gas Tax Fund.

March 9, 2018 -The Powell River Regional District is pleased to announce that a Federal Gas Tax Fund application for upgrades to the Van Anda Improvement District waterworks system has been approved. The project is eligible for up to $864,508.00 in funding and upgrades are expected to start in Spring of 2018.

Improving this system will have a direct impact on the 250 ratepayers as well as the local businesses, the local school, and the fire service. The upgrade will bring the water filtration system to a level that complies with the Drinking Water Protection Act, ending the need for boil water advisories. The increased water pressure in the distribution stream as well as the new water tank will improve firefighting capabilities. Modernizing this system will also have a direct impact on the environment, as it will reduce the amount of chlorine used and the volume of water processed.

Each year, the Government of Canada provides over $278 million in funding for local government infrastructure projects across British Columbia through the Federal Gas Tax Fund. The Union of BC Municipalities administers the Federal Gas Tax Fund in British Columbia in partnership with the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.

Community infrastructure is a cornerstone of our quality of life,” said Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast. Thanks go to a partnership with all levels of government for this funding, which will improve the drinking water supply for the people in Van Anda, and to the community members who have advocated for this support.”

Director Wendy Booth, President, Union of British Columbia Municipalities –“Communities across BC are looking for funding to replace, upgrade and expand local infrastructure. The federal Gas Tax Fund is accelerating the pace of infrastructure renewal through the transfer of close to $3 billion since 2005 for projects in our province. I appreciate the Government of Canada’s long-term commitment to fund priorities identified by BC local governments.”

Sandy McCormick, Director, Electoral Area ‘D’ – “I’m very pleased that the Powell River Regional District was able to support the application and that it was approved by upper levels of government. Without this support it would be impossible for small villages like Van Anda to fund this type of costly infrastructure upgrade. Clean, safe drinking water is vital to the livability of all communities.”
