This is to advise the public that effective noon tomorrow, July 18th, the Coastal Fire Centre will be implementing a ban on campfires and larger category 3 burning. These prohibitions, along with the category 2 “backyard burning” ban in place since May 18th, mean that all open fires are now banned in areas throughout our region under the authority of the provincial Wildfire Act.
Fire bans under the Wildfire Act Fire apply to all BC Parks, Crown lands and private lands, but do not apply within the boundaries of a local government that has open fire bylaws in place and is serviced by a fire department. Specifically the provincial ban applies to all areas of the qathet Regional District except:
- Savary Island: SIVFD implemented total fire ban effective noon today July 17th, under authority of RD bylaw 373
- City of Powell River, has informed that campfires at Willingdon campsite will be prohibited tomorrow according to City of Powell River bylaw 1932
- Van Anda Improvement District – already has a total fire ban in place
- Gillies Bay Improvement District – has advised that Gillies Bay will also implement campfire ban at same time as provincial ban (note Shelter Point Regional Park is within GB local fire service area).
The RD’s Parks and Properties crew will be putting up campfire ban signs in applicable locations in the regional parks to ensure park users are aware of the ban.
